FAQ
Why a 2"x48" grinder instead of a 2"x72"?
Everything about a 2"x72" belt grinder is more expensive. You need a bigger grinder frame, a bigger motor, a high rated speed control, more expensive belts, larger tool arms, everything adds up exponentially for only a marginally better experience. Over the course of my 16 years making knives, I spend only around 10% of the time really getting material off as quick as possible. The vast majority of my time was working on the detail work, where you don't need a huge motor, and where the 2"x48" grinder excels. One of the biggest hesitations I have heard about choosing a 2"x48" is that belts won't last as long and that there won't be a big enough selection. Although the belts will wear down faster, they are typically the same cost or even cheaper than 72" belts when you look at the price per inch of abrasive. Not only that, since the individual belts are cheaper, you can build a good selection of grits for less initial investment. 48" belts are also one of the most common belt sizes, and are available in nearly as wide a selection as 72" belts.
